The Story
In medieval European tradition, the heart was not a pump. It was the seat of the soul — the organ where reason, will, and mortality converged. Medieval anatomists drew it surrounded by roots and vessels, as if it were a living tree rather than a mechanical object. The Sacred Heart tradition rendered it wrapped in thorns and flame. Vanitas painters placed it alongside skulls and hourglasses as a reminder that even the most vital organ is temporary. This pendant holds all three traditions in a single engraved scene.
At the center: a heart formed from roots, blood vessels, and intertwined vines — suspended, exposed, neither fully alive nor fully dead. To the left, two scholars bent over manuscripts: the scribes of knowledge, recording what they cannot fully understand. To the right, a woman with a skull and serpent at her feet — the Vanitas figure, beauty standing over decay, holding a scroll that will outlast the hand that wrote it. The Latin inscription runs the border: E Pluribus Unum. Out of many, one. The heart at the center is the answer to what that one thing is.
What It Represents
Knowledge
The scribes on the left are not recording facts. They are recording the attempt to understand — the endless human project of making meaning from what cannot be fully known.
Mortality
The Vanitas figure on the right is the oldest reminder in Western art: beauty is temporary, the skull is permanent, and the scroll outlasts the hand that wrote it.
The Living Heart
The central heart — formed from roots and vessels rather than flesh — is neither anatomical nor symbolic alone. It is both: the organ that keeps you alive and the thing that makes life worth keeping.
Memento Mori
The full scene is a memento mori composition: knowledge on one side, death on the other, the heart suspended between them. Remember that you will die. Remember what you are keeping alive in the meantime.
Design Highlights
- Central anatomical heart — formed from intertwined roots, vessels, and vines, suspended at center
- Left panel: two medieval scholars — one holding a book, one writing, set against a classical colonnade
- Right panel: Vanitas female figure — bare-shouldered, holding a scroll, skull and serpent at her feet
- Empty scroll banner at the base — the inscription that has not yet been written
- Open circular four-prong frame — E Pluribus Unum inscription visible around the full border
- Skull bail at top — memento mori framing for the entire composition
Aging & Patina
Hand-cut from a modern coin replica and individually polished by hand. The silver-plated copper surface is designed to develop a unique vintage patina over time — making each piece a personal relic rather than a mass-produced accessory.
Styling Suggestions
- Dark academia — the scholars and manuscript imagery makes this the most intellectually legible pendant in the collection
- Gothic menswear — the Vanitas composition reads as wearable art against all-black or deep jewel tones
- Occult aesthetic — the anatomical heart and serpent imagery aligns with alchemical and esoteric fashion
- Vampirecore — with velvet and layered silver chains, the baroque scene reads as dark aristocratic portraiture
