The Story

The Hobo Nickel tradition began in the late 19th century, when itinerant carvers transformed ordinary coins into miniature sculptures — faces, skulls, and figures cut by hand with nothing but a blade and time. The results were not currency anymore. They were talismans: small, personal, and made by people who understood that an object only holds meaning if someone puts it there.

This pendant places Baphomet — Éliphas Lévi’s 1856 figure of duality, the hermetic symbol of “as above, so below” — at the center of a coin face bearing the E Pluribus Unum inscription and the 1893 date. Each piece is hand-cut. The symbol is older than the coin. The coin is older than the pendant. The meaning is yours to carry.

What It Represents

Duality

One hand raised, one lowered. The Baphomet figure encodes the hermetic principle of correspondence — that opposing forces are not enemies, but mirrors of each other.

The Templar Shadow

The Knights Templar were accused of worshipping Baphomet during their 14th-century persecution. Whether the charge was true is still debated — but the symbol survived the Inquisition, which says something about its staying power.

Currency as Relic

The 1893 date and E Pluribus Unum inscription frame the symbol in a specific American moment — when money, identity, and survival were all contested at once.

Design Highlights

  • Baphomet relief hand-cut at center — 1893 date and star border intact around the open frame
  • Four-prong coin ring frame — E Pluribus Unum inscription fully visible from all angles
  • Skull bail cast separately above, structurally integrated into the frame
  • Coin diameter: 38 mm (approx. 1.5 in); box chain included

Aging & Patina

The silver-plated copper surface develops character with wear — edges deepen, relief shadows intensify, and the piece takes on the quality of something carried for years. Each piece ages into its own version of itself.

Styling Suggestions

  • Worn alone over a black collarless shirt — the coin scale reads clearly without competition
  • Layered with a shorter flat chain; the coin sits as the anchor piece
  • With structured dark outerwear — the antique silver tone reads as an artifact, not an accessory
  • Festival, ritual, or everyday dark aesthetic where the symbolism is meant to be seen

RING SIZE GUIDE

Find your perfect fit — before the ring finds you.

♦ ♦ ♦
Step 1 - Measure with ruler 01

Cut a thin strip of paper or use a piece of string. Wrap it snugly around the base of your finger.

Step 2 - Mark the overlap 02

Mark the point where the paper or string overlaps with a pen. This marks your finger's circumference.

Step 3 - Read your size 03

Lay your string flat and measure the distance between the marks in millimeters.

OPEN BAND RINGS

Select Veilhinge rings feature an open band design and can be gently adjusted ±1 size from their original shipped size for a comfortable fit. To avoid metal fatigue, we recommend minimal and gradual adjustment — do not bend the band back and forth repeatedly.

SIZING TIPS

Measure at the end of the day — fingers are slightly larger then, giving you the most comfortable fit.

If you're between sizes, size up for a more comfortable wear.

Knuckle larger than the base of your finger? Measure both and choose a size in between.
