The face on the coin was never meant to last.
Hobo nickel carving began in the margins of American history. During the early 20th century, itinerant artists transformed mass-produced coins into singular objects — carving skulls, portraits, and symbols into the faces of currency using dental tools and pocket knives. The coin became a canvas. The carving became a statement about what endures when official power does not.
This pendant is inspired by that tradition. A replica coin base — bearing the inscription E Pluribus Unum, the star border, and the date 1921 — reimagined through hand cutting and finishing. The presidential portrait is gone. In its place: a skull, rendered with the same gravity the original face once carried. The frame is an open circular mount held by four prongs, suspended from a skull bail. The coin is the art. The skull is the correction.
For those who understand that the most honest image you can put on a coin is the one that outlasts every empire that ever minted one.
What It Represents
Defiance — The skull replaces the portrait not as destruction, but as reinterpretation. Power is temporary. The skull is not.
Mortality — E Pluribus Unum — out of many, one. On this piece, the phrase carries a different weight: all currency fades, all faces are forgotten, all that remains is the fact of having existed.
Transformation — The coin art tradition is about taking an object of official authority and making it personal. This pendant carries that logic into wearable form.
Identity — Whose face appears on a coin is a political decision. Replacing it with a skull is a philosophical one.
Coin Art Process
Each pendant begins as a replica coin base — not antique currency, but a form that carries the visual language of the original. The portrait is cut away and replaced through hand shaping and surface refinement. The result is depth where the original face was flat, contrast between the preserved inscription and the reimagined center, and a texture that reads as something made rather than manufactured. The skull sits within the coin’s original border as if it was always meant to be there.
Design Highlights
- Skull portrait at center — replaces the original coin face, rendered with depth and shadow
- Open circular frame — four-prong mount, coin border fully visible
- E Pluribus Unum inscription and star border preserved around the rim
- 1921 date retained at the base of the coin
- Skull bail at the top — sculptural, consistent with the pendant’s symbolic language
Styling Suggestions
- Dark americana — the natural home of coin art; worn over a plain tee or under an open jacket
- Biker aesthetic — pairs with leather, raw denim, and worn boots
- Gothic menswear — worn as the statement piece in a dark layered look
- Vintage silver accessories — stacks with other antique-finish pieces without competing
- Alternative streetwear — contrast against minimal fits for maximum visual tension
